As an adult, you’re in charge of your banking services

As an adult, you will, for the first time, have the full right to keep track of your banking services and to open new ones without your parents’ consent. If your parents have opened banking services for you before you turned 18, you can continue to use them normally. However, you can now make changes to your services independently if you want to.

Below we have compiled some of the key things you should consider:

  • Your parents’ right to manage your banking will end and you alone will be responsible for your banking.
  • Your parents’ rights to use your accounts will be cancelled automatically, and they will no longer see your accounts in Nordea Mobile and Netbank.
  • If your parent holds a card linked to your account, they will be able to use the card until it expires, unless you want to cancel this right earlier.
  • You will have full access to any savings and investments held in your name and your parents’ right to view and manage them will expire.

Some have savings from their childhood – others start from scratch

As an adult, you decide on your own savings and investments. This also means that if your parents have saved for you when you were underage, you get to decide on what to do with these savings once you turn 18.

You might be tempted to start spending your childhood savings straight away, but we urge you to consider whether you should continue saving. Instead of spending on a holiday, it might be smarter to invest your money as a nest egg for your future first home.

We’ll be happy to help you prepare a plan that will allow you to build your wealth by continuing monthly saving.

If you’re starting your savings from scratch, don’t worry. At the age of 18, it is in no way too late to start saving. Young savers have time on their side. You can still have a big leg up on others who start saving at a later age.

You’ll find your own way to save and invest from our exceptionally large selection of funds, equities or deposit accounts or a combination of these. You can get started with even a small sum. We make it easier for our young customers to save and invest with the following benefits:

  • Equity savings account free of charge – we won’t charge you the monthly custody fee (normal price is 2.45 euros per month). This benefit is available for customers under 30 years old.
  • Trading in funds free of charge – we won’t charge you subscription, switching or redemption fees if you trade in funds in Nordea Mobile or Netbank.

If you already have Nordea access codes with e-identification, you can continue to use them normally.

The access codes are your key for logging in to Nordea Mobile and Netbank. E-identification, which is a form of strong electronic identification, is a feature added to Nordea access codes. E-identification allows you to log in to third-party services, such as MyTax, MyKanta and My Studyinfo.

If you don’t have Nordea access codes yet, you can set them up online if you have the online banking credentials of another Finnish bank. Otherwise, you should book an appointment in-branch to set them up.
