Tips from our experts for safe payments

Our anti-fraud experts Sara Helin and Dilan Rashidi investigate Finnish fraud cases daily. We asked them what we all should keep in mind when we pay our bills and do our daily shopping.

Check the recipient details carefully

According to our anti-fraud experts, people often fall for scams when they are in a hurry. People pay less attention then and may fail to notice suspicious details. This also makes people more susceptible to transferring money to fraudsters.

“It’s important that you always check the payment details carefully and make a note of who you are transferring money to. Take a pause for a moment before you confirm a payment. If you feel even slightly unsure, check that the payment details are accurate. You can ask us for advice or talk to a family member before you confirm the payment,” says Dilan.

We have also developed a new feature for Nordea Mobile and Netbank, which verifies the recipient’s details and helps customers to notice suspicious payments.

“When you’re creating a new payment, our system compares the recipient name you have entered with the account holder’s official name. After this check, you will be informed whether the details match each other. This will help you to spot scammers using a false identity,” says Sara.

Set payment limits according to your needs

The security limits for payments are a concrete tool for enhanced security.

“People don’t often notice the importance of security limits until they get scammed. Everyone should set personal security limits that may in the best-case scenario prevent losses or at least mitigate them if you fall victim to a scam,” says Sara.

In Nordea Mobile and Netbank you can edit card settings, such the geographical usage area, the cash withdrawal limit and online usage.

“For example, if you don’t usually shop online, you can disable the online usage of your cards in Nordea Mobile. If you suddenly need to pay online for something, it’s easy to change the setting,” Dilan says.

We will also introduce a new payment limit feature in Nordea Mobile and Netbank, which will enhance the security of payments made from bank accounts.

“With this feature, you can set a daily payment limit for credit transfers. Once the feature is introduced, you should consider what your payment limit should be and set it to reflect your daily spending,” advises Sara.

Use instant payments when needed

Starting from autumn 2025, customers have been able to make instant payments in Nordea Mobile and Netbank. Instant payments enable money transfers to another person or company in under 10 seconds. What do our anti-fraud experts think about instant payments?

“You should use instant payments when you have a justified need for them. For example, if your rent is due, you can transfer the money to your landlord’s account immediately with an instant payment,” explains Dilan.

An instant payment may also be a good option if you’re selling an item to another private individual.

“If you are selling a valuable item on a second-hand marketplace and the buyer transfers the money to you as an instant payment, you can see the money in your account right away,” Dilan continues.

As a general rule, Sara and Dilan recommend that you use a standard credit transfer if there’s no hurry to make the payment. Standard credit transfers are also processed quickly between banks – usually either on the same day or on the next banking day depending on when you make the payment.

“You should also remember to stay alert if anyone tries to pressure you into making a payment quickly. Consider all payments carefully,” Sara adds.

Some additional tips to keep in mind

  • Only keep what you need for your daily spending in your current account. Keep the rest of your money in your PerkAccount or other savings account. If your card or card information gets stolen, the scammer won’t be able to get their hands on all your money. Discover our savings accounts
  • Check your account and card transactions regularly. If you use Nordea Mobile, you can also enable card notifications, which allows you to spot payments that you don’t recognise quicker.
