How to switch cards smoothly and securely

We recommend that you always order a new card first and wait until you have started using it before you close your old card. By doing so, you will ensure that you always have a payment instrument that you can use.

You don’t need to worry about missing out on a new credit card simply because you’re already using one of our credit cards.

If we see that your application for a new credit card would be rejected, we will provide you with special instructions. In such a case, we can cancel your old card when we deliver you the new one.

Step-by-step guide to switching cards

Always start by applying for a new card under Services in Nordea Mobile or Netbank.
If your card application is approved, decide whether you want to keep your old credit card. Remember that all our service packages allow two cards.
If you want to close your old credit card or any other card that you have, you can do so in Nordea Mobile or Netbank. Select your card and then “Close card”. You should only do this after you have received your new card.
If your card application is rejected and we assess that your payment ability is sufficient for one credit card, you will receive separate instructions from us when we send our credit card decision to you in Nordea Mobile and Netbank.

Get cards at a lower price in a service package

You get a current account, online banking credentials and 1 or 2 payment cards at a clearly lower cost by choosing one of our service packages.
If you have more than two cards, the ones that cost the most will automatically be included in your package, and your other cards will be subject to the fees set in our service-specific tariff.

Frequently asked questions about switching cards

How many cards should I have?

We recommend that all our customers have two cards so that you’re not left stranded if one of the cards is lost or stolen.

If your payment ability is strong enough, nothing prevents you from having more cards.

However, if you only want to pay for a service package, you should have no more than two cards.

Can it be expensive to temporarily have three cards?

If you have three cards temporarily, it won’t necessarily be very expensive.

We will automatically include your two highest-costing payment cards in your service package, so you will only need to pay the fee set in our service-specific tariff for your lowest-cost card.

For example: You already have a Nordea Gold card and a Nordea Debit card, and you decide to order a Nordea Platinum card. When we approve your Nordea Platinum application, you will get our Platinum package that includes Nordea Gold in addition to Nordea Platinum.

If you soon after starting to use Nordea Platinum close either your Nordea Debit or Nordea Gold card, you need to pay the fee set in our tariff for Nordea Debit for a maximum of one month.

Why shouldn’t I close my old credit card immediately if I already have a backup card?

If you close one of your current cards before you order a new card, you are left with only one card for a short period. In that case, there is a risk that if this card is lost or stolen, you would be left without any card at all.

It’s also possible that, for some reason, we may not be able to issue you with a new credit card. For these reasons, it’s safer to apply for a new credit card first and close your existing card at a later stage.

Can I switch credit cards if I have late payments?

No, you can’t switch cards or have a new one issued to you if you have late payments, a recorded payment default entry or outstanding debts in collection.
