A Finnish bank account, debit card and online banking credentials for new customers

If you are living in Finland as a foreign national, you can become our customer if you have a valid identity document and the right of residence in Finland. Having a Finnish personal identity number will speed up the process.

You can book an appointment at one of our branches to become a customer. After the meeting, we will set up a current account, a debit card and online banking credentials for you.

Our daily banking services are free of charge for the first three months, and you can access additional services online once you have become a customer.

Proof of right of residence

To prove your right of residence in Finland, you will need one of the following:

  • a residence permit or a certificate of a pending application (if you are a non-EU citizen) or
  • registration of the right of residence (if you are an EU citizen).

The Finnish Immigration Service helps people who are applying for asylum or a residence permit.

It also offers a payment card during the asylum application process, for example for receiving reception allowance. If you have this card, you may not need to open banking services right away.

Finnish personal identity number

For becoming our customer, it’s recommended that you have a Finnish personal identity number. If you don’t have a Finnish personal identity number, you should apply for one before you start banking with us.

Depending on your situation, you can apply for a personal identity number through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, the Finnish Tax Administration or the Finnish Immigration Service.

Strong electronic identification

In Finland, online banking credentials are also accepted as a means of electronic identification for many services beyond the banking services we provide. You can obtain online banking credentials and a strong electronic ID when you become a customer, provided you have a valid identity document required for this purpose.

If you do not have a passport or identity card issued by an EEA (European Economic Area) country, Switzerland or San Marino, you should be prepared to verify your identity at a police station.
