How do I pay with my phone?

You can use your smartphone to make payments if:

• your phone has a payment app, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, and
• you have added your Nordea card to the payment app.

Paying with your smartphone in stores

When you are at the checkout in a store, hold your phone near the payment terminal to make a contactless payment. Note that the payment terminal must support contactless payments. Just look for the contactless payment symbol on the payment terminal.

Paying with your smartphone online

You can also pay with your phone in many online stores and apps. Select Apple Pay or Google Pay as your payment method and confirm the payment.

Do I need an internet connection when paying with my phone in-store?

No, you do not. Smartphones have the NFC technology (Near Field Communication), which enables contactless payments without an internet connection. You can make a contactless payment by tapping the payment terminal that supports this feature with your phone.

You can check your phone’s settings to see if it has NFC technology.

Where can I make mobile payments?

You can make mobile payments with your phone in places that support this feature. Such places include:

• stores
• restaurants
• public transportation
• petrol stations

You can make mobile payments in Finland and abroad.

In addition, you can make mobile payments when shopping online or through an app.

Can I add more than one card to my mobile payment app?

You can add one or more cards to mobile payment services. And they can be both debit and credit cards. When you’re paying at a store checkout, you just need to select the card you want to make the mobile payment with.

One of your cards will always be the default card that the service will primarily use for payment. You can change your default card if you wish.

If you have a combination card, you can add both the debit and the credit feature to the mobile payment service. Your combination card will be shown as two separate cards in the app, so you can choose to pay directly from your bank account (debit) or using the credit facility (credit).

Why are mobile payments safe?

Mobile payment apps use tokenisation technology, which converts the number of your physical card into a digital form. This creates a virtual card in your mobile app that you can use to make payments.

Thanks to tokenisation, the number of your payment card is not saved on your phone or in the app and it is not disclosed to the merchant in the transaction.

When you pay with a smartphone, the payment terminal may ask you to confirm the payment with your fingerprint, face ID or PIN.

Mobile payments are subject to the payment and geographical restrictions you have set for your physical card. For example, if you restrict the use of your physical card to Finland, then you can make mobile payments only in Finland.

If you lose your phone, nobody can see your card details or make payments with your phone without identity verification. However, you can block the digital version of your card by calling Nordea Customer Service. After this you can continue to use your physical card normally.

What are mobile payments?

To make mobile payments, all you need to do is add your payment card to a mobile payment app and use a smart device – your phone or a wearable like a watch, ring or keyfob – to pay.

The different forms of mobile payment are:

• Paying at checkouts with a phone, watch, ring or keyfob.
• Paying online with your phone’s payment app
• Transferring cash using the recipient’s phone number

What if my phone breaks or I lose my smartwatch?

If you lose your phone or other smart device, nobody can see your card details or make payments with your card without identity verification.

You should still block the virtual card by calling our card blocking service on +358 20 333Opens new window (local rates apply). The blocking service is available 24/7. If you have activated more than one card on your phone, you can block them all in the same call.

You can continue to use the physical card normally.
