Frequently asked questions - Contactless Payment
Frequently asked questions about contactless Payment
- What are the benefits of contactless payment?
Contactless payment is an easy and quick way to pay purchases of less than 25 euros. You don't have to insert the card in the payment terminal or key in the PIN.
- How do I use contactless payment?
When your card has a symbol for contactless payment, you can use your card for contactless payment of purchases costing less than 25 euros. When the cashier registers your purchases and asks for payment, put your card close to (about 3–4 cm) the payment terminal. The payment terminal will inform you of an authorised purchase with an audio and light signal. You do not have to key in your PIN.
- Where can I use my contactless payment card?
You can use your contactless payment card at all stores carrying the symbol for contactless payment and which accept contactless payments. You can make contactless payments both in Finland and abroad.
- When do I have to key in my PIN when making a card payment?
All large card purchases must still be paid by inserting the card into the chip-and-PIN payment terminal and keying in the PIN. For security reasons, a payment terminal may occasionally ask you to key in your PIN even though the total sum of your purchases is less than the contactless payment limit of your card. In this case, you have to insert your card normally into the payment terminal and key in your PIN.
- Activation of the contactless payment card?
When paying with your contactless payment card for the first time, insert the card into the payment terminal and key in your PIN.
Contactless debit payments must be activated with a debit purchase and contactless credit purchases must be activated with a credit purchase.
In Finnair Plus MasterCards and Stockmann MasterCards, the contactless payment feature has been linked to the credit facility.
In Nordea Credit, Nordea Gold, Nordea Premium, Nordea Platinum and Nordea Black combination cards the contactless payment has been linked to the debit feature.
- Can I use my contactless payment card to pay normally by inserting my card into the payment terminal and keying in my PIN?
You can always pay normally by inserting your card into the payment terminal and keying in your PIN. This is possible at all stores that have a normal chip payment terminal in addition to contactless payments. A few sectors use the contactless payment feature only.
- How can I get a contactless payment card?
As of 16 March 2017, all Nordea cards, with the exception of the Tuohi MC card, will have the contactless payment feature. The present card holders will receive a contactless payment card automatically in connection with card renewals.
- How do I know if my card is a contactless payment card?
You can recognise the card as a contactless payment card from the wave symbol on the front side of the card.
- What are the costs of a contactless payment card?
There is no extra charge for a contactless payment card. You can find more information on our cards' monthly and annual fees on the Tariff tab.
- Is contactless payment secure?
The merchant enters the amount in the payment terminal and you approve the payment by holding your card close to the payment terminal. When you are using the contactless payment feature of your card you do not have to key in the PIN. In this case, there is no risk that the card's PIN would be known to any third parties. Contactless payment uses the same secure technology as ordinary chip cards.
For security reasons, a payment terminal may occasionally also ask you to key in your PIN in contactless payments, which also increases their security.
- What if I lose my contactless payment card, or if it falls into the wrong hands?
If you lose your card, call the card blocking service at 020 333 immediately. If you have kept your card in a safe place and blocked it immediately after it had gone missing, you are not responsible for the unauthorised payments made with it.
- What if my card is misused without the card's PIN?
The contactless payment feature in a card does not change the responsibilities laid down in the card terms and conditions. Nordea is responsible for the potential misuse of the card if the card has been used and kept in accordance with the card terms and conditions. In addition, your responsibility for the card includes making a lost card report if your card is lost or stolen. Remember to make the report as soon as you notice that the card has been lost or stolen.
- I do not want a card with a contactless payment feature. What should I do?
Contactless payment as a method of payment is becoming more and more common in Finland and abroad at a rapid pace. Nordea no longer actively offers cards without the contactless payment feature, but if the customer so wishes, you can offer him/her a Nordea Credit or TUOHI MasterCard credit card. As of 16 March 2017, there will no longer be cards linked to bank accounts without the contactless payment feature.
