Victory of the “Taloustieto” (Economics) Competition went to Akaa

21.05.2010Nordea and the Association for Teachers of History and Social Studies in Finland organised this spring, for the 45th time, the Taloustieto competition intended for the comprehensive school students of the 9th grade. This year the winner was Aleksi Huhtala from Akaa.

Around 42,500 students from 504 schools participated in the two-staged competition. The national start-up competition was held in March. Based on the start-up competition, 28 competitors were selected for the finals in accordance with quotas based on the number of inhabitants in the provinces. The finals were organised in Helsinki from 20 to 21 May.

The objective of the Taloustieto Competition is to increase young people's interest in matters related to society and especially to economics. The questions have been drafted on the basis of the curriculum of social studies at Finnish comprehensive schools as well as domestic and international economics affairs.

This year housing trade was pondered from many different angles at the first stage of the finals. At the second stage of the finals, students’ knowledge was tested with a question dealing with the indebtness of Finland and other euro countries.

The three top places in the finals went to:

1. Aleksi Huhtala, Toijala Comprehensive School, Akaa

2. Katri Malmi, Nöykkiö Comprehensive School, Espoo

3. Ibrahim Hussein, Apollo Comprehensive School, Helsinki
